QUESTION: My Porsche service advisor told me that they would charge me $600-800 to change my TPMS equipment from my factory wheels to my new after-market wheels, does it really take 4-6 hours to complete this task? If this is the case should I option to purchase TPMS equipment for my new set.
ANSWER: You are certainly not the first nor will you be the last person to question the amount of time dealerships or indy shops charge to swap over TPMS eqiupment from one set of wheels to an other. In general most shops may not have the adequate tooling in order to make the job easy therefore you end up paying more becuase of old or out dated equipment. It's the same as hiring a contractor to build your next home using only hand tools, now imagine how much you'll be paying him and how much longer the job would take. It's important not only to find a qualified technician in your area if you plan on swaping your TPMS equipment but one who has equipment that will allow them to spend a minimal amount of time performing the task.
My advise is to either purchase TPMS equipment with your new wheels to avoid costly repair shops from taking you to the bank, besides the TPMS equipment usually start to fail at around 5-years so if you have a 2006 and it is 2011 you are a prime candidate to replace your old TPMS anyhow.
Demonstration of how we swap out TPMS equipment here at Wheel Dynamics, now understand that using the right equipment will allow your service tech to get the job done right in a minimal amount of time saving you in the pocket book. On average we charge our clients $100-150 for TPMS swaps and the average time is 1-1.5 hours from start to finish.
